| Fabrizio Plessi |
Fabrizio Plessi was born in Reggio Emilia, Italy in 1940. Not much is available
about his history. He studied at the Accademia delle belle Arti, Venice. Since
1990 he has taught at the Kunsthochschule für Medien, Cologne. He lives
in Venice, Cologne and on the Spanish island of Mallorca.
Plessi creates artificial nature. He combines video, sound, and texture into
a physical medium.
Heinrich Klotz, Director,
Zentrum fur Kunst und Medientechnologie -
Of the important contemporary media artists, Fabrizio Plessi
knows like no other how to hover between semblance and reality. The avant-garde
of Modern art claimed that art and life - and thus simulation and being -
were identical. They believed that the progress of art consisted in art's
trespassing into life. For Plessi, no: he drives fiction into reality in order
to stop almost immediately in the act of overturning the real; he fixes the
fiction while it is still a semblance, and brings it into dramatic contact
with reality. This balance between believe-it's-the-truth and the truth of
reality, this strained relation between semblance and being, consititutes
the terrain in which poetry, as well as fiction, are born.
